Vid, a father facing the looming threat of a multinational iron ore mine near his home, finds resilience and hope through his young son’s imaginative perspective, as optimism, fairy tales, and mysticism transform their grim reality.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
"Sun Never Again" is inspired by my childhood days in a small village in Bosnia where an international mining corporation was slowly eating up the surroundings of my grandmother's house and forcing our neighbors, friends, and family members to slowly abandon their homes due to the mines expansion or simply pollution and poison. My grandmother was one of those who faced an impossible choice: to stay and eventually die from asthma and pulmonary fibrosis caused by the air pollution, or to leave her entire life behind as if it had never happened. That impossible choice, the grim visuals of the mine, the jackals screaming all night, and the constant noise of mining were so surreal and impactful that I eventually decided to shoot the film in an actual mining village—Krivelj, the largest copper mine in Europe located in Serbia.

Dule is one lucky boy who spends his childhood with his heroic father and mother, too young to realise that his home will soon be robbed by a mine next to the village. That is, if death from the pollution doesn’t take him first. The striking feature of “Sun Never Again” is its pervasive symbolism. It is a film that unfolds like Arvo Pärt’s soundtrack spread across the cinema screen.
